Principles of Reiki
This text is an excerpt from my Reiki course.
PRINCIPLES OF REIKI and their meaning
Monasteries in Asia serve multiple purposes. This is where children learn to read and write. Patients come for treatment. The distressed come for counseling. Those tired of everyday life may, during their sick leave, live in a monastery temporarily until they feel better. Then, they return to their homes.
In addition, the monks are also engaged in the protection of animals and nature.

Be aware that Buddhism is not a religion, but philosophy. Buddha is not a god, but a person who, by self-improvement, experienced enlightenment. Anyone can become a Buddha.

Formerly, Reiki was only taught in monasteries (not only in Japan). Thanks to Mikao Usui,
not only monks can now learn this therapy, but also lay people.
How the principles of Reiki have been incorporated into the Reiki system?
When Mikao Usui realized he had the ability to use Reiki energy, he decided to do
something that he considered worthy - treat the homeless.
At the time in Japan, the homeless were usually unemployed people who, due to illnesses,
couldn't work. Mikao Usui thought that, by healing them, they will be able get a job and
become happy members of society. So healing was what he did. For several years.

Unfortunately, after some time, he noticed that many of the people healed returned to
him. The phenomenon bothered him and he began to talk to them about the reasons for why
they were coming back on the street.
The homeless would say: "Yes, you have healed me and I could work again. I got a job.
I started a family. But at one point, I found it easier to live on the street - there is
no need to go to work, listen to my wife or raise children. And when I get sick,
I can count on you any given day or time, plus it's totally free.

It was then when Mikao Usui realized what kind of mistake he had made - he didn't demand from people anything for himself or even for themselves. They wouldn't take responsibility for their life and health. They thought of it as Mikao's duty. Therefore, Mikao introduced the principles of Reiki. Anybody who refused to comply with them, couldn't count on his help.
These were five principles introduced long time ago by Emperor Meiji:
1. just for today, do not be angry;
2. just for today, do not worry;
3. just for today, respect - in his day "respect your ancestors and elders" - nowadays, we would say: "respect yourself and others";
4. just for today, work hard;
5. just for today, be grateful;
and, something the Emperor did not include, the principle of energy exchange. The principle of energy exchange was based on the fact that every person coming for help should get something in return. It didn't have to be money. It could be a service, fruit or some other product.
Exchanging energy makes people better respect what they are given.
The principles of Reiki aim to develop the sense of responsibility for one's own life.
